Strong 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Hokkaido as Japan Braces for Additional Seismic Activity
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 rocked Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido in the early morning hours of Monday, marking another significant seismic event in a region that has experienced intense geological activity over the past week.
The tremor struck at 5:23 a.m. local time in Hokkaido's southern region at a depth of 83 kilometers (52 miles), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which adjusted its initial magnitude reading upward from the preliminary estimate of 6.1. The U.S. Geological Survey concurred with the assessment of the earthquake's strength.
The JMA confirmed that no tsunami warning was necessary following the quake. The U.S. Geological Survey indicated that the risk of significant structural damage and casualties remained relatively low due to the sparse population density in the area, located approximately 200 kilometers east of Sapporo, Japan's fifth-largest city.
However, officials cautioned that the region faces heightened hazards from secondary natural disasters. "In areas that experienced strong shaking, the danger of falling rocks and landslides has increased," a JMA representative stated during a press briefing.
The meteorological agency also issued a warning that the probability of experiencing additional earthquakes of comparable magnitude within a 200-kilometer radius over the coming seven days is substantial, signaling that seismic instability in the region may persist.
This latest earthquake follows another tremor measuring magnitude 5.0 that struck in the sea several hundred kilometers south of Hokkaido just hours earlier, continuing a pattern of frequent seismic activity in the area.
The Monday quakes represent part of an ongoing seismic sequence affecting Japan, occurring less than one week after a major magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Iwate prefecture on the previous Monday, which had caused widespread concern across the nation.
