A moderate earthquake measuring 6.1 in magnitude has rattled northern Japan, with authorities reporting no initial casualties or significant structural damage, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The seismic event occurred early Monday morning in the northern regions of the country, with the U.S. Geological Survey confirming the preliminary magnitude reading shortly after the tremor was detected.

Details of the Earthquake

The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 18 kilometers (11 miles) to the west of Sarabetsu, a small municipality situated in Hokkaido prefecture. The tremor originated at a depth of 81 kilometers (50 miles) beneath the surface, as documented by the USGS.

Context of Recent Seismic Activity

This incident follows another significant seismic event that occurred the previous Monday in the same general region. A more powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan, prompting authorities to issue a brief tsunami warning for nearby coastal communities. That stronger earthquake also triggered an upgraded alert level regarding the potential risk of a more severe megaquake affecting the coastal areas of the prefecture.
