MAGA lawmaker introducing legislation to pave way for Trump's ballroom

Following a shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday evening, Republican legislators are mobilizing to transform President Donald Trump's proposal for a secure ballroom into concrete legislative action.

Sen. Tim Sheehy of Montana, a first-term Republican, announced plans to introduce legislation this week seeking unanimous consent to authorize construction of the proposed ballroom within the White House's East Wing. The senator framed the initiative as a matter of national security and presidential safety.

Security Concerns Drive Legislative Push

"It is an embarrassment to the strongest nation on earth that we cannot host gatherings in our nation's capital, including ones attended by our President, without the threat of violence and attempted assassinations," Sheehy stated. "A President of any party should be able to host events in a secure area without attendees worrying about their safety. This is common sense. Let's get it done."

The proposed $400 million structure has emerged as a top priority for the Trump administration, though the project has faced public opposition. Polling conducted last year revealed significant American disapproval regarding the demolition of the East Wing required for construction. However, Saturday's incident has shifted the narrative toward treating the ballroom as a critical security infrastructure project.

Broader Republican Support

Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, a prominent member of the House Freedom Caucus, echoed support for the initiative. Roy indicated he would demand funding for the ballroom as part of any major spending legislation related to the Department of Homeland Security.

"Any consideration of DHS reconciliation instructions this week & beyond should provide for construction of a secure ballroom on White House grounds," Roy said, noting the proposal should accompany other legislative priorities concerning Immigration and Customs Enforcement, border security, and various cultural policy measures.

Presidential Advocacy

Trump himself promoted the ballroom concept immediately after the shooting incident, posting on Truth Social: "This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House. It cannot be built fast enough! While beautiful, it has every highest level security feature there is plus, there are no rooms sitting on top for unsecured people to pour in, and is inside the gates of the most secure building in the World, The White House."

Details on the Incident

The shooting occurred during Trump's first attendance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner since assuming office. The event took place at the Washington Hilton. Law enforcement subsequently apprehended the suspect, 31-year-old Cole Allen, who is scheduled for arraignment on Monday.
