Over on Twitter, Michael "Cromwelp" Douse posts a shot of a framed news article about the game, titled "Steam briefly broke when Baldur's Gate 3 hit Early Access" (which was written by current GamesRadar+ news editor Iain Harris).
Article continues belowWalked past this in the office. Forgot this happened. At the time we even fact checked it with Valve. I hope we absolutely demolish it next time. You remember so little when doing so much. pic.twitter.com/7W4qnryoRFApril 24, 2026
For context, when Baldur's Gate 3 launched into early access in October 2020, the game hit a peak of 73,980 players. Just under three years later when the full release of the game launched in August 2023, it pulled in 875,343 players. Per SteamDB's chart, no month since then has had a peak lower than the early access launch peak. That's not to mention that the game held the number three spot on the Steam charts in February.
So with Baldur's Gate 3 being way bigger than it was back in 2020, Douse's hope to "demolish it next time" with Divinity seems like it has a strong likelihood of happening, especially when the studio is touting that the upcoming RPG is "even larger than Baldur's Gate 3." However, I imagine Valve would very much like to avoid that, especially after Silksong also temporarily killed Steam last year.
