Korda Reclaims World Number One Ranking with Commanding Chevron Championship Victory

BBC News 1 переглядів 2 хв читання

American golfer Nelly Korda has surged back to the summit of the world rankings following a commanding five-stroke triumph at the LPGA Chevron Championship, her second title in the event over three seasons.

Korda's decisive performance at Houston's Memorial Park propelled her past Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul in the standings, particularly following Thitikul's failure to advance past the cut. The 27-year-old's victory extends her major championship collection to three titles, complementing her earlier success at the 2021 Women's PGA Championship.

A Mentally Demanding Triumph

Despite establishing a commanding lead heading into the final round, Korda revealed the psychological demands of maintaining her advantage throughout the weekend.

"That was a hard weekend. Honestly, having that big of a lead, it's not easy. It was definitely one of the hardest things I've had to do mentally," Korda shared with NBC Sports following her victory.

The American credited her support network for the successful conclusion, stating: "I have an amazing support system. An amazing family who are right behind me. An amazing caddie who is on the bag and I'm just happy to get it done."

Tournament Performance Details

Korda matched the tournament's 54-hole scoring record on Saturday but ultimately fell two shots short of the event's all-time scoring record of 20-under par. On Sunday, she carded two birdies on the opening three holes but surrendered momentum with two bogeys on the back nine.

Her final scorecard read 13-under par, achieved through opening rounds of 65 on both Thursday and Friday, followed by consecutive 70s over the weekend.

Final Leaderboard

  • Winner: Nelly Korda (US) -13
  • Second Place: Patty Tavatanakit (Thailand), Ruoning Yin (China) -12
  • Fourth Place: Inbee Park (South Korea), Xiyu Liu (China) -12

Tavatanakit, who began the final day five shots behind in second position, failed to mount a significant challenge, completing her round with a two-under 70 that left her unable to close the gap.
