King Charles III calls for unwavering resolve to defend Ukraine in US Congress

He stated this during a joint session of the U.S. Congress, Ukrinform's correspondent reports.

The King recalled that immediately after the events of September 11, 2001, when NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time and the UN Security Council stood united against terrorism, "we answered the call together, as our people have done so for more than a century, shoulder to shoulder through two world wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan, and moments that are defined our shared security."

"Today, that same unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine and her most courageous people. It is needed in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace," Charles III said.

These words were met with loud applause from members of Congress and senators.

The distinguished guest pointed to the importance of the transatlantic partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom, calling it a unique alliance that remains key to security and stability.

"The alliance that our two nations have built over the centuries, and for which we are profoundly grateful to the American people, is truly unique... That partnership, I believe, is more important today than it has ever been," the monarch noted.

He also stressed the need to strengthen defense capabilities in response to modern threats.

"The United Kingdom recognizes that the threats we face demand a transformation in British defence," Charles III said. "Our country has committed to the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War."

The monarch also highlighted NATO's role in ensuring collective security, as well as close military cooperation between the United States and the United Kingdom, particularly in programs such as the development of F-35 fighter jets and trilateral partnerships involving Australia.

His speech also addressed economic cooperation, innovation, joint technological projects, and responsibility for environmental protection.

"Our generation must decide how to address the collapse of critical natural systems... These natural systems provide the foundation for our prosperity and our national security," Charles III emphasized.

He called for maintaining openness to international cooperation and avoiding isolationism.

"I pray with all my heart that our alliance will continue to defend our shared values with our partners in Europe and the Commonwealth and across the world, and that we ignore the clarion calls to become ever more inward looking," the King said.

At the same time, he emphasized the global role of the United States: "America's words carry weight and meaning... The actions of this great nation matter even more," Charles III concluded.

As Ukrinform reported, King Charles III of the United Kingdom and Queen Camilla are on a four-day state visit to the United States.
