Federal Judge Dismisses Laura Loomer's Defamation Suit Against Bill Maher and HBO

A U.S. federal judge has ruled in favor of Bill Maher and HBO, striking down a defamation lawsuit filed by conservative activist Laura Loomer. The court determined that Loomer failed to establish the necessary legal standard of actual malice required to proceed with her claim.

Loomer initiated legal action in October 2024 following remarks Maher made during one of his television broadcasts. During the episode, the late-night host made a jest suggesting that the 31-year-old activist might be engaged in a contrived relationship designed to influence the presidential election due to her proximity to former President Donald Trump, noting that she fits his apparent preferences.

Maher further elaborated on his commentary, referencing a previous editorial segment from his show.

"We did an editorial here a few years ago... it was basically, who's Trump f*cking? Because I said, you know, it's not nobody. He's been a dog for too long, and it's not Melania. I think we may have our answer this week. I think it might be Laura Loomer."

The judge's decision upholds the threshold that public figures pursuing defamation claims must demonstrate that the defendant acted with actual malice—meaning the statements were made with knowledge of their falsity or with reckless disregard for the truth.
