Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler Cast in Joseph Kosinski's 'Miami Vice '85' for 2027 Release

Director Joseph Kosinski has officially announced the title and casting for his upcoming Miami Vice adaptation, with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler set to headline the period crime film scheduled for August 6, 2027.

The film, titled Miami Vice '85, will be distributed by Universal Pictures and marks a fresh take on the iconic 1980s television series created by Anthony Yerkovich. Jordan will take on the role of Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, originally portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas, while Butler will step into the shoes of James "Sonny" Crockett, the character made famous by Don Johnson during the show's original run from 1984 to 1990 on NBC.

Distinguished from Michael Mann's 2006 Miami Vice film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, Kosinski's version will function as a period piece drawing inspiration from the television series' pilot episode and first season. The production is set to commence this year, with Kosinski employing IMAX cameras—a technique he utilized for his recent blockbusters Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming F1: The Movie.

Jordan, an Academy Award winner known for his performances in Black Panther, Creed III, and Ryan Coogler's Sinners, is simultaneously developing a reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM, which he will direct, star in, and produce. Butler, an Oscar nominee for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, recently appeared in Dune: Part Two and The Bikeriders, with upcoming projects including the A24 crime thriller Enemies and the Apple series Masters of the Air.

The film is being produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski, with screenwriter Dan Gilroy crafting the script based on characters and concepts created by Yerkovich. The screenplay draws from an earlier draft written by Eric Warren Singer, while the project is also based on material executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann from the original series.

Representation for the key players includes 1v1 Entertainment and WME for Jordan, WME and Brillstein for Butler, and CAA and Untitled Entertainment for Kosinski.
