Major European Firms Urge Swift Toll Exemptions for Zero-Emission Trucks

Leading logistics companies and environmental organizations are pressing EU Transport Ministers to rapidly adopt toll exemptions for electric vehicles as a critical strategy to accelerate the transition toward sustainable freight transport.

A coalition of prominent businesses, including DHL, Volvo, and TRATON, has issued a joint appeal calling for the immediate implementation of the Eurovignette Directive's provisions for toll-free passage of zero-emission trucks. The move aims to address the significant cost differential between diesel and electric commercial fleets.

The Case for Toll Exemptions

The signatories emphasize that despite commercial trucks representing merely 2 percent of all vehicles circulating on European roads, they are responsible for approximately 25 percent of transport-related emissions. By eliminating toll obligations for electric trucks, policymakers can effectively narrow the economic gap that currently makes diesel-powered vehicles more attractive to fleet operators from a financial standpoint.

The joint letter, submitted on behalf of the logistics and automotive sectors as well as environmental advocacy groups, underscores that toll exemptions represent a pragmatic and economically efficient mechanism to accelerate the adoption of clean freight technologies across the continent.
