James Comey turns himself in after being indicted for alleged Trump threat over ‘86 47’ post

Former FBI Director James Comey turned himself in Wednesday to face prosecution for allegedly making a social media threat against President Donald Trump.

Comey self-surrendered in the Eastern District of Virginia following his indictment on two felony counts Tuesday, according to CNN. The latest charges related to a social media post Comey made where seashells spelled out “86 47.” The phrase “86” can be known as to “nix” something, while Trump is the 47th president.

The prosecution marks the second time the Trump administration has filed charges against Comey, who Trump fired in 2017 during the FBI's investigation into whether Trump's 2016 campaign colluded with Russia to help him win the election.

The first case, alleging that he lied to Congress, was dismissed last year when a judge ruled that the federal prosecutor had been appointed illegally.

Comey posted on social media Tuesday after the newest charges were announced. In a video posted on social media Tuesday, Comey said, "Well, they’re back — this time about a picture of seashells on a North Carolina beach a year ago, and this won’t be the end of it.

"But nothing has changed with me. I’m still innocent, I’m still not afraid and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary. So let’s go," he said.

The latest charges stem from a since-deleted Instagram post last year that featured a photo of seashells arranged to show the numbers "86 47."

"Cool shell formation on my beach walk," Comey wrote in the caption.

Trump's 2024 election made him the United States' 47th president and the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines eighty-six or 86 as slang that can mean "to reject, discontinue, or get rid of (something)."

In May, Trump told Fox News that Comey knew "exactly what that meant."

"A child knows what that meant,” Trump said. “If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what that meant, that meant assassination. And it says it loud and clear.”
