iOS 27’s ‘completely rebuilt’ Siri will include a new system-wide search gesture: report
With just a few weeks left until WWDC, Bloomberg has shared multiple details on what Apple has in store for the revamped, Google Gemini-powered Siri on iOS 27. Here are the details.
’An always-on agent that can tap into personal data and take action across apps’
Over the past few months, Bloomberg has been reporting on several aspects and changes coming to the Gemini-powered, always-on, agentic Siri on iOS 27.
That includes reports saying this year’s WWDC artwork is based on Siri’s new animation, that Siri would also appear in the Dynamic Island with options to “Search or Ask” when activated from the power button or via the wake word, and that Apple is finally planning a standalone Siri app with a chatbot-like conversational interface, complete with uploads, history, and pins.
Now, Mark Gurman has shared even more details on what users can expect from the revamped Siri, building on his previous reporting. The report also includes new information about an upcoming upgrade to the Camera app and system-wide improvements to Liquid Glass.
According to Gurman, iOS 27 will feature a new gesture that will allow users to invoke a system-wide “Search or Ask” feature, with an option to tap a microphone icon to activate voice mode. From there, users will be able to “press the search bar to toggle between using Siri or third-party offerings like ChatGPT or Gemini as their search engine.”
From the report:
Users can also activate a new system search by swiping down from the top center of the screen anywhere. When a user does that, a “Search or Ask” bar in the Dynamic Island will appear.
The report adds that this interface is similar to the current Spotlight Search feature on iOS, but that it “can show more advanced results and additional data from within apps.”
In his report, Gurman also notes that Apple will make it easy to upload images and documents to Siri via the app and the chatbot view, using a “+” button.
Finally, the report notes that users will be able to move from a standard Siri interaction into this chatbot-like conversation mode by swiping down on the transparent results card that appears after invoking the assistant:
When users engage with Siri, they can swipe a transparent results card down to enter into a chatbot conversation mode, which looks similar to a text message thread. This interface has in-line mini app cards to see results for things like the weather, upcoming appointments and notes.
