British Grandmother, 74, Touched by 'Innate Kindness' of Chinese People During Solo Journey Across Nation

A 74-year-old British traveller embarked on an independent expedition through China and discovered herself at the centre of a remarkable wave of compassion from Chinese internet users who voluntarily assisted her throughout her voyage.

The touching narrative unfolded when Xiao Yue, a senior student at a university in Hezhou, Guangxi Province in southern China, initially encountered the British grandmother during volunteer work in Phuket. The traveller, identified as Gill, has traversed 72 countries independently and has engaged in humanitarian work across multiple nations.

Upon learning via email that Gill intended to visit China with Guilin in Guangxi Province as her second destination, Xiao recognised the opportunity to help. Given the proximity of Guilin to her hometown, she organised to meet the elderly traveller and serve as her guide for a two-day exploration of the city.

A Network of Support

What began as a chance encounter evolved into an extensive support network. Chinese internet users across the country rallied to assist the 74-year-old grandmother during her travels, demonstrating what many described as the innate kindness characteristic of the Chinese people.

The grandmother, who rarely relies on her mobile phone due to concerns about battery depletion, found herself guided and supported by numerous online supporters who coordinated efforts to ensure her journey proceeded smoothly. Her independent spirit and willingness to explore unfamiliar territories captured the hearts of netizens nationwide, inspiring widespread goodwill throughout her stay.
