Imax Boards American Cowboy Doc ‘Frontier’ From ‘Oppenheimer’ Producer (Exclusive)
Imax and film financier Nocturnal Entertainment have boarded Frontier, a documentary about modern American west cowboys from Oscar-winning Oppenheimer producer Charles Roven and Believe Entertainment Group.
Imax will finance and produce the documentary alongside Nocturnal as the film technologies company gives the directorial debut from veteran photographer and author Anouk Masson Krantz a late 2026 big screen run.
Her original book of photography, Frontier, saw Krantz travel across the Americas, including the United States, to visually capture the North American cowboy, the Central American vaquero and the South American gaucho. Her documentary produced by longtime Imax collaborator Charles Roven and Stephanie Roven through Atlas Entertainment, and Dan Goodman from the Oscar-and Emmy-winning Believe Entertainment Group, was filmed on location at the T4 Ranch in eastern New Mexico.
Krantz captured real cowboys at work on a private ranch a world away from the frontier history or the present portrayed in scripted TV western dramas like Yellowstone and 1883. “It is an honor to partner with legendary Hollywood producer Chuck Roven, Nocturnal and Imax to bring the authentic, modern-day cowboy and rancher—and the breathtaking landscapes of the American West—to an immersive cinematic Imax experience for audiences worldwide,” the director said in a statement.
The documentary, now in post production, will use Imax’s proprietary image and sound technology to get audiences alongside cowboys, whether on the range, in the saddle or at camp with an immersive take on modern ranching life. “We share a passion for ranch life and partnering with Imax, Nocturnal and Anouk on this project has been a truly rewarding experience,” Stephanie and Charles Roven said in their own statement.
Peter Billingsley, Akiva Nemetsky and Keaton Heinrichs are executive producing Frontier for Nocturnal and LA Times Studios. Besides Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Atlas Entertainment recently produced the Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen, and Amazon MGM’s Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Kali Reis and Annabelle Wallis. Atlas is producing the Michael B. Jordan-directed reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair, and Road House 2 for Amazon Prime.
