Strategic Partnership Aims to Revolutionize Last-Mile Urban Mobility

Global automotive manufacturer Hyundai Motor Company and Indian three-wheeler specialist TVS Motor Company have formalized a Joint Development Agreement to jointly engineer and bring electric three-wheeler solutions to market. The collaboration seeks to address India's critical last-mile transportation needs while establishing a foothold in the world's largest three-wheeler market.

The partnership builds on momentum generated by the companies' successful presentation of an electric three-wheeler concept vehicle at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, signaling both firms' dedication to sustainable urban transport solutions tailored to Indian consumers.

Division of Expertise and Responsibilities

Under the agreement framework, Hyundai Motor will spearhead the vehicle's design and co-development efforts, leveraging its advanced research capabilities, mobility technology infrastructure, and customer-focused design methodology. The South Korean manufacturer has identified India as a strategic priority market and views this partnership as instrumental to improving the nation's transportation landscape.

TVS Motor, meanwhile, will contribute its cutting-edge electric platform, extensive three-wheeler engineering knowledge, and intimate understanding of Indian consumer preferences. The company will assume responsibility for local production and sales operations, utilizing its established manufacturing facilities throughout India and preparing for eventual export markets.

"The co-developed E3W enables broader access to safer and more sustainable transportation for people across the country," stated Joongsun Ko, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Planning at Hyundai Motor Company.

Vehicle Features Engineered for Indian Conditions

The electric three-wheeler concept unveiled at the 2025 expo incorporates several innovations specifically designed to overcome India's unique transportation obstacles:

  • Adaptive suspension systems accommodating monsoon-season road conditions
  • Strengthened safety technologies
  • Ergonomic seating for extended daily commutes
  • Advanced cooling systems suited to tropical climates
  • Modular interior layouts supporting diverse applications including passenger service, cargo transport, and emergency response

Sharad Mishra, President of Group Strategy at TVS Motor Company, emphasized the partnership's significance: "By bringing together complementary strengths — including our electric three-wheeler platform, engineering expertise, and deep understanding of customer needs — we are well-positioned to deliver purpose-built products for India and additional markets."

Local Manufacturing and Economic Impact

A defining aspect of the partnership involves sourcing and manufacturing key vehicle components domestically within India. This localization strategy carries multiple strategic advantages, including strengthening India's automotive supply chain, generating employment opportunities, minimizing production expenses, and ensuring dependable after-sales customer support and component availability.

Development Timeline and Next Steps

The agreement marks the transition from prototype phase to full-scale product development and manufacturing readiness. The vehicle will undergo comprehensive testing protocols, design refinement for Indian market conditions, and certification processes to satisfy national regulatory requirements and consumer expectations.

Both organizations have activated specialized cross-functional development teams focused on accelerating product development cycles and expediting regulatory approval procedures. The companies remain committed to delivering the initial production model to the Indian market as a defining achievement in sustainable last-mile transportation innovation.
