Southeast Asian Airlines Capitalize on Middle East Disruptions to Boost European Routes

Major carriers including Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and Qantas report surging demand for Europe-bound flights as travellers seek alternatives to affected Middle Eastern hubs.

The Iran conflict is reshaping aviation patterns across the region, with Southeast Asia's major airlines emerging as unexpected beneficiaries of the geopolitical turmoil affecting Middle Eastern aviation corridors.

Rising Passenger Numbers Despite Regional Challenges

Singapore Airlines (SIA), alongside regional competitors Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and Qantas Airways, has reported robust performance on European routes throughout March, capitalizing on passenger demand fleeing disrupted Middle Eastern hubs. The ongoing drone and missile attacks in the region have prompted significant route diversions.

SIA disclosed that its passenger traffic increased by 14.7 per cent year-on-year in March. The airline attributed this growth to multiple factors, including heightened Easter holiday travel demand anticipated for April, coupled with "spillover Europe-bound traffic as capacity through Middle East air hubs was affected by the ongoing Middle East conflict."

Expanded Capacity and Route Additions

The surge in demand has prompted swift operational responses from regional carriers. SIA expanded its European flight capacity to 93.5 per cent utilization in March, a substantial increase from 79.7 per cent during the same period the previous year.

In response to the heightened passenger volumes, multiple airlines, including SIA, introduced more than 15 additional flights between Singapore and Europe during March. Cathay Pacific similarly announced earlier this month that it had bolstered its European service offerings to accommodate the unexpected surge in bookings.
