Fernandez Fires Chelsea to FA Cup Final as Player Power Prevails Over Managerial Turmoil

Chelsea's 1-0 Victory Over Leeds Sets Up Manchester City Showdown at Wembley

Chelsea advanced to the FA Cup final following a narrow 1-0 triumph against Leeds United at Wembley, with Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez scoring the decisive header in the 23rd minute. The Blues will face Manchester City in the final on 16 May, presenting an opportunity to salvage what has been a deeply troubled season through silverware.

From Crisis to Cup Glory

The victory marked a dramatic turnaround in fortunes for the West London club, whose interim head coach Calum McFarlane replaced Liam Rosenior just 106 days into his tenure. Rosenior's departure came after Chelsea endured a catastrophic run of five consecutive league defeats without scoring—a fate that had not befallen the club since 1912.

The contrast between performances under the two managers proved stark. Where Rosenior's Chelsea appeared devoid of fight and determination, the same squad demonstrated precisely those qualities against Leeds, grinding out a hard-fought victory despite a scrappy display. Chelsea secured their first clean sheet against top-flight opposition since 17 January and ended a 498-minute goal drought against Premier League clubs.

The Question of Player Power

The swift transformation following McFarlane's arrival raised uncomfortable questions about squad morale and player empowerment at the club. Former England goalkeeper Rob Green suggested the issue epitomised a troubling dynamic: "They're a product of the system they are in and in modern-day football. It's ugly but they have all the power and it was epitomised by Fernandez. He ran the game. It was down to him how they played. That is not healthy for a football club but for Chelsea it gets them to finals."

McFarlane defended the players' character following the semi-final, acknowledging that criticism had come from results-driven reactions rather than from within his coaching staff. "That group has massive character," he stated on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Fernandez's Redemption Arc

At the centre of Chelsea's resurgence stood Fernandez, whose performance at Wembley demonstrated why the club invested heavily in the World Cup-winning midfielder. His 23rd-minute header proved decisive, taking his seasonal tally to 13 goals—the second-highest for any midfielder in the Premier League this season, behind Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White with 16.

The Argentina international had recently received a two-match suspension from Chelsea after Rosenior claimed he had "crossed a line" by granting an interview hinting at a potential departure following their Champions League elimination by Paris St-Germain. Speculation had linked him with Real Madrid.

Historical Context: Abramovich's Blueprint Under New Ownership

Chelsea's capacity to reach finals despite managerial instability recalls the Roman Abramovich era, which spanned from July 2003 to May 2022. During that 19-year period, the Russian billionaire's "hire and fire" approach generated 18 major honours and two Community Shields across 30 finals contested under 15 different managers.

The most striking example came in 2012, when interim manager Roberto di Matteo won both the Champions League and FA Cup after taking over from the dismissed André Villas-Boas.

Under current ownership BlueCo, the club has claimed two major honours—the Conference League and Club World Cup—while reaching three finals under eight different managers. Should Chelsea defeat Manchester City on 16 May, they would replicate this unlikely feat of extracting silverware from chaos.

The presence of BlueCo co-owner Behdad Eghbali at Wembley alongside newly appointed England head coach Thomas Tuchel—who became the first managerial casualty of the current regime when dismissed after 100 days in September 2022—underscored the turbulent landscape in which the club operates.
