Hersheypark Swiftly Reverses Controversial Mask Ban for Young Visitors Following Social Media Uproar

The Pennsylvania-based amusement park abandoned its newly implemented facial covering restriction after facing significant online criticism over the policy's potential impact on health-conscious guests.

Hersheypark moved quickly to rescind a mask prohibition that ignited debate across social media platforms. The dispute emerged on Saturday when an online user posted imagery of signage displayed throughout the chocolate-themed destination stating that visitors below age 21 would be prohibited from wearing masks or other face coverings.

Park officials attributed the now-suspended directive to security enhancements prompted by violent confrontations between masked youth that had occurred at the venue. Nevertheless, critics raised concerns that the restriction would disadvantage individuals relying on masks for health protection or those with compromised immune systems.

Following widespread confusion sparked by the signage, Hersheypark management acknowledged the misstep and confirmed the measure had been discontinued. A representative from Hershey Entertainment & Resorts shared the following statement with The Independent:

"A recent operational update intended to enhance park security led to some confusion, and we made the decision to suspend that update shortly after implementation, pending further review. Guests may continue to choose to wear a face covering during their visit. We remain focused on providing a safe, comfortable, and welcoming experience for all."

What Led to the Policy

According to reporting by Fox 43, the opening day on April 3 witnessed multiple altercations involving masked teenagers throughout the facility. Local authorities from Derry Township confirmed that park security documented several confrontations among teen groups, which resulted in two juvenile arrests and one adult apprehension. Additional individuals involved in the incidents were escorted from the premises. Police indicated they have no record of injuries sustained during these events.

The Online Backlash

Months following these disturbances, the mask prohibition sign surfaced and rapidly circulated across social networks. The viral post prompted heated discourse among commenters regarding the directive's fairness toward health-conscious attendees.

One commenter expressed concern, writing: "So if you're COVID-informed and/or immune-compromised, you may want to find another amusement park for your family vacation." Another user characterized the policy as "absolutely despicable," questioning how guests attempting to protect their health could do so under such restrictions.

Additional criticism labeled the measure as "extremely discriminatory and ableist." However, some users defended the park's authority, noting that as private property owners, management could establish their own operational guidelines. Others suggested the prohibition specifically targeted ski masks associated with disruptive behavior among teenage visitors, distinguishing them from medical protective equipment.

Enhanced Security Measures

Concurrent with reversing the mask policy, Hershey Entertainment unveiled a revised guest re-entry protocol designed to bolster security measures. The new system requires visitors departing and planning to return the same day to have their photograph taken upon exit. This image undergoes automated verification during re-entry to validate ticket legitimacy.

Company officials explained to Fox 43 that the procedure exists to "ensure that admission is used only by the original ticket holder for same-day re-entry." They further emphasized that the verification system operates strictly for identification purposes, with guest information managed according to established privacy and security protocols.
