Heroes of Might and Magic is still a phenomenon as new game sells half a million in three days

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era

Heroes of Might and Magic, one of the longest-running modern gaming franchises, has recently received a new game: Olden Era. And though it modernizes much of the gameplay and strives to be a holistic HoMM experience incorporating bits and pieces of every major entry, it seems new and old players are equally ecstatic to give it a go, as it's already sold over 500,000 copies.

This was confirmed by its developers on Steam, who announced that Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has successfully crossed the half-million threshold in under 72 hours. "Less than three days have passed since you first stepped into the world of HoMM: Olden Era, and you have already changed our lives forever," the dev team wrote in a Steam post today.

They added that the game also crossed 60,000 concurrent players on Valve's storefront, garnered more than 6,000 reviews (89 percent of which are positive), and managed to soar up to the top of Steam's top-sellers list and stand alongside major blockbuster releases like Diablo 4 as well as indie hits such as Windrose.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is still in early access and only became available to the broader world on April 30. Developer Unfrozen plans to keep the game within the early access program for about a year, though that is always subject to change.

The current version is receiving praise from players who are saying that it's one of the best Heroes of Might and Magic games since the well-known HoMM 3, which is usually considered the greatest of the franchise. Despite complaints about the AI being way overpowered and campaigns being brutally difficult, few players are actually leaving negative reviews, urging fans of the classics as well as the newer entries to hop into the game.

Furthermore, it seems the developers are rather quick and comprehensive when it comes to implementing player feedback, and considering how high of a standard games like Crimson Desert have set for developer speed, I think we're going to see a lot more of that going forward.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is available on Steam and the Microsoft Store.
