Hades 2 Director Says He Focuses on Making Games Worth Remembering, Not Their Legacy

Greg Kasavin, the creative director at Supergiant Games, maintains a grounded perspective on the enduring impact of Hades and Hades 2, two of the gaming industry's most celebrated roguelike titles.

Speaking with media representatives before the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards, Kasavin discussed his thoughts on what the Hades franchise might ultimately mean to players and the industry. Rather than dwelling on long-term legacy, he expressed satisfaction simply knowing that audiences engage with his studio's work.

Valuing Player Time Over Recognition

"We never know what the so-called legacies of our games may be. The legacy of almost every video game is to be forgotten," Kasavin explained. "So, if we manage to make things that don't get forgotten right away, that's great."

The developer emphasized that his primary objective centers on creating experiences that leave players with positive feelings about their time invested. He stressed that regardless of price point—whether purchased through sales, obtained for free, or acquired through other means—all games demand a player's most precious resource: time.

"You could get games sometimes for really cheap on a good Steam sale, you can pirate them, or what have you, but they all require time," Kasavin noted. "And so we have to be choosy with games, even if they're completely free."

Players Determine a Game's Legacy

Kasavin argued that determining a game's ultimate significance remains outside a developer's control. Once released, the title transcends its creators' authority over its meaning and cultural impact.

He drew parallels to Greek mythology, which serves as the foundation for the Hades series. "There's no, you know, IP holder for Greek mythology. It's a communal thing. It spans – even though it originated in ancient Greece – it spans the world, and these gods presided over the entire world," he stated.

Both Hades and Hades 2 have achieved remarkable critical success, with the original earning a 93 on Metacritic and its sequel receiving a 95—both signifying universal acclaim. The games have consistently won awards across numerous categories at major industry ceremonies.
