A grandmother in Baton Rouge, Louisiana has been convicted of manslaughter after she forced her 4-year-old granddaughter to drink half a bottle of whiskey, which ultimately led to the child's death.

According to local police, the incident happened on April 21, 2022. Police were dispatched to the home after receiving a call about an unresponsive child.

Firefighters and EMS workers tried to revive the child, later identified as 4-year-old China Record, but were unsuccessful, WAFB reports.

Detectives investigating the incident learned that Roxanne Record, the child's grandmother, had suspected the girl had snuck a sip of whiskey from a bottle in the house. As punishment, Record forced the girl to drink approximately half a bottle of whiskey, police said.

The girl's mother, Kadjah Record, allegedly watched the punishment.

According to Record's arrest warrant, the toddler's blood-alcohol content was .680. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a blood-alcohol reading of 0.3 to 0.4 will be enough to cause alcohol poisoning, while a reading above 0.4 is potentially fatal.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office determined that China died from acute alcohol poisoning.

Roxanne Record reportedly told police that she had "messed up" and "wanted to take full responsibility" for the girl's death.

The grandmother also reportedly said that she'd "ruined everyone's lives."

Investigators said in their report that Kadjah Record gave several inconsistent statements to police. Kadjah Record was arrested at the scene.

Kadjah will return to court next month, where she will face first-degree murder charges.

Roxanne Record will be sentenced on August 10, and is facing up to 40 years in prison.
