Governor's Memoir Draws Inspiration from Community Response to Immigration Crackdown

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is preparing to release a new book titled Good Neighbors, which draws significantly from the intense immigration enforcement operations that swept through the Minneapolis-St. Paul region earlier in the year and the vigorous community opposition that followed. The publication will arrive next year through W.W. Norton & Company, as confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

"Last winter, Minnesotans from all walks of life showed up for one another with compassion, courage and resilience," stated Walz, a Democrat, in a written statement. "Here in Minnesota, it's simple — we call it being a good neighbor. I've always been fascinated by the ways in which we keep community in America, and how we interweave our lives."

The 62-year-old governor gained prominence nationwide in 2024 when Vice President Kamala Harris selected him as her vice-presidential running mate in an ultimately unsuccessful campaign against President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance. A spokesperson for Norton declined to provide details regarding whether Walz intends to address the campaign in the forthcoming book, noting that no supplementary information beyond the official announcement was available at this time.

Walz emerged as a vocal opponent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the region, particularly criticizing incidents that resulted in fatalities. The deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in January drew special attention. In response, Minnesota has initiated legal action against the federal government, claiming that ICE's enforcement activities inflicted over $600 million in economic damage to the state.
