THE BREAKDOWN:

  • General Motors has allegedly suspended the development of its electric trucks.
  • The automaker told Motor1 that it 'has not canceled any electric trucks' and that 'EVs remain the end game for GM.'
  • Production for refreshed versions of its electric trucks was scheduled to start in 2028.

Production for the GMC Hummer EV started in late 2021. It was General Motors’ first vehicle on the new Ultium battery platform and the first big step toward selling only electric vehicles by 2035. That platform would go on to underpin the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Cadillac Escalade IQ—but a lot has changed since then.

According to a new report, the future of those vehicles could be in question, with the automaker reportedly suspending the development of its next-generation electric truck program. Three sources told Crain’s Detroit Business that GM has recently informed suppliers of an indefinite delay, without providing a timeline for when it could resume.

But GM has since denied these reports. In a statement to Motor1, a company spokesperson said:

'GM has not canceled any electric trucks. EVs remain the end game for GM and we are firmly committed to our award-winning electric truck and SUV portfolio, along with our advanced technology roadmap. There is no impact to production and availability of the current battery electric trucks.'

GM's EV Sales Slump

Like other automakers, GM has watched sales for its EVs fall after the federal government ended the tax credit. Through the first quarter, the electric Silverado, Escalade, and Hummer saw sales decline by 41.0 percent,26.8 percent, and 52.2 percent, respectively.

GMC Sierra EV sales increased, but it was by just 3.1 percent. The brand sold 1,288 trucks in the first three months of the year compared to 1,249 in 2025, which is a drop in the bucket for an automaker that sold 626,429 in the first quarter.

Motor1’s Take: It's impossible to ignore the declining sales of electric vehicles, so, while GM hasn't canceled any trucks just yet, we imagine the automaker is rethinking its timelines instead. EVs remain the automaker's "end game," it just might take longer to get there.
