With options to stream TV, movies, music, books, and more, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself occupied on all your devices. But streaming services are costly, and typically offer recurring monthly fees, which can add up quickly -- especially for college students.

Also: Spotify vs. Apple Music: I've subscribed to both streaming services, and prefer this one

Thankfully, if you're a student, you can use your status to your advantage and save a few bucks on Spotify, plus gain exclusive access to Hulu. Students can secure a subscription bundle with Spotify Premium (normally $12.99/month), and Hulu with Ads (normally $7.99/month) for just $6.99/month, saving you up to $14/month. Here's how.

Before you can activate a Spotify Premium student discount bundle, remember a few things. As long as you are enrolled at a US Title IV-accredited college or university (and above the age of 18), you're eligible to access this exclusive bundle for a student price. The offer will be valid for 48 months (the average time to complete a bachelor's degree) and must be reverified once every 12 months.

You'll also need to grab some essentials for your verification process. This includes your Spotify login (if you have one already), and proof of enrollment to be used on SheerID (the platform Spotify uses to confirm your student status). Examples of proof of enrollment include a School ID with an expiration date, a class schedule, a tuition receipt, a transcript with current classes, etc., or any other school-issued document with an issue date from the current term.

1. Fill out the SheerID verification form

Locate the SheerID verification form on Spotify's website. Follow the steps outlined and complete the form. If your school's not listed in this form, you're not eligible at this time. You'll be asked to log into your college/university's portal, or to upload proof of your enrollment (be sure to have this on hand).

2. Wait for SheerID confirmation

How does Spotify verify my student status?

For Spotify student subscriptions, the streaming giant is partnering with SheerID, a verification platform used by several other brands to confirm student status and other vocation-specific discounts, such as military, teacher, and more. SheerID also houses discounts for students, teachers, and more to access in one place.

How do I obtain my free Hulu?

Once you have your Spotify Premium student offer activated, you can then activate your Hulu (With Ads) plan from your services page.

Is it safe to use student verification platforms like SheerID?

I wouldn't have written this article if there was anything remotely suspicious about this student discount from Spotify, which requires verification from SheerID. I have used UniDays, SheerID, and other student-discount platforms like Student Beans for all four years at college and completed the student verification process myself. It is easy to do, and I have had no issues. Although I have now graduated, I continue to keep up with the best student offers to share with friends, family, and ZDNET readers.

Of course, there's always a potential risk when you place any information online, so I recommend being cautious. However, Spotify is not out to compromise customer trust by partnering with nefarious sites.

If Spotify supports student verification via SheerID (much like many other companies), you can trust that the process has been vetted. The company would have a lot to lose if it weren't.

How do I re-verify my Spotify student status?

Once a year, you must re-verify using SheerID that you're a student to continue receiving the discounted student rate and Spotify bundle. You can re-verify your student status by following the instructions online

What happens to my Spotify student discount if I don't re-verify my student status?

If you're still a student and do not verify your student status once every 12 months, you will not receive the discounted rate or bundle access to Hulu. You'll need to re-verify if you want to obtain the discounted rate. You'll continue to get access to Premium Student with Hulu for up to 12 months from the date you subscribed while the services are available (students can re-verify their eligibility once every 12 months for a maximum of 3 additional 12-month periods).

Also: The case for buying a MacBook Neo right now - especially for students

The current Spotify student discount offer available on the site will allow students to access Spotify Premium and Hulu with Ads services for only $6.99/month (a savings of $13.99/month).

How long does a Spotify student subscription last?

Students enrolled in a degree-granting institution can receive up to 48 months of Spotify's student bundle package at a discounted rate, the average time it takes to complete a bachelor's degree.

How do I qualify for a Spotify student subscription?

To qualify for a Spotify student subscription, you must be enrolled at a US Title IV-accredited college or university (and above 18) and have your student status verified. Once verified, the offer will be valid for 48 months and must be re-verified once every 12 months.

I want Spotify's student plan, but I already have Hulu. What should I do?

If you're subscribed to the Hulu (With Ads) plan without any premium network add-ons (e.g., HBO) and pay Hulu directly and not through a third party (e.g., Roku or Amazon), your existing Hulu account can be included with your Spotify Premium Student subscription with Hulu for $6.99/month. As a heads up, Spotify says you will need to switch your Hulu billing to Spotify.

Will I get charged for Spotify and Hulu together?

Yes. While enrolled in the student discount plan, you'll pay one bill of $6.99/month + tax to Spotify for both services.

What happens to my subscription when I graduate?

You'll maintain access to Spotify's Premium Student with Hulu for up to 12 months from the date you subscribed, while the services are available. To remain subscribed for the student price, students can re-verify their eligibility once every 12 months, for a maximum of 3 additional 12-month periods. If you cannot re-verify at the end of any 12-month period, you'll no longer be eligible for Spotify Premium Student.
