Merz: Climate Action Must Not Compromise Economic Growth

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that environmental protection measures should proceed in tandem with industrial and economic advancement, speaking at an international climate conference in Berlin. The head of the CDU-led government emphasized the importance of balancing climate commitments with public acceptance and market competitiveness.

Climate Goals and Economic Balance

During his address at the Petersberg Climate Dialogue conference on Wednesday, Merz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to combating climate change while cautioning against policies that could undermine prosperity. "We want to contribute to a reduction in climate change and Germany will make huge efforts to combat it," he stated.

The chancellor stressed the need for climate policies to be "multilateral, ambitious and effective" to maintain both societal backing and foster economic expansion. He warned that any transition strategy resulting in industrial decline would face public resistance and ultimately stifle technological innovation. "Nevertheless, we will continue to be an important sponsor of public climate action," Merz added.

Green Technology as Economic Opportunity

Merz highlighted the substantial growth potential within the clean energy sector, noting that the international market for sustainable technologies is projected to nearly triple by 2035, reaching approximately $2 billion (€1.7 billion).

He emphasized that the green-tech industry has demonstrated remarkable expansion within Germany itself. "Clean energy has become a driver of growth," the chancellor noted, pointing out that since 2010, Germany's clean-tech sector has outpaced overall economic growth by 50 percent.

Market-Based Climate Solutions

Merz expressed backing for the European Union's emissions trading system, characterizing it as both "market-based and technology-neutral." However, he argued that refinements to the EU's emissions trading framework are necessary, particularly provisions designed to "maintain competitiveness" and ensure the system remains "fit for the future."

The emissions trading scheme, which came into operation in 2005, functions by setting a ceiling on greenhouse gas emissions and permitting companies to exchange allowances. Under this mechanism, major emitters are required to obtain permits for their emissions.

Germany's Climate Targets Under Scrutiny

Germany has committed to reaching climate neutrality by 2045. While Merz has stated that the nation will achieve these objectives, environmental advocacy organizations have voiced concerns about his administration's rollback of climate-focused initiatives. The coalition government has called for relaxing the EU's prohibition on gasoline and diesel engines and has advocated for expanding natural gas power generation capacity.

The Petersberg Climate Dialogue, hosted annually by Germany since 2010 alongside UN climate summits, is anticipated to draw government representatives from over 30 nations.
