Gauff Overcomes Stomach Virus to Advance at Madrid Open
American third seed Coco Gauff powered through illness to defeat Romania's Sorana Cirstea 4-6 7-5 6-1, securing her place in the Madrid Open's last 16 despite battling a stomach virus throughout the match.
Gauff's victory came at considerable physical cost, as the world-ranked player sought medical assistance during the second set and was forced to vomit into a bin mid-match. Nevertheless, she rallied from a set and break down to secure the win, continuing her preparation for next month's French Open, where she holds the defending champion status.
Illness Sweeping Through Madrid
The American is not alone in her health struggles at the tournament. Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek withdrew from her Saturday contest against Ann Li, revealing she experienced "zero stability and zero energy" during the match. Additionally, Marin Cilic pulled out before his second-round encounter with Joao Fonseca on Friday, while Liudmila Samsonova also withdrew due to illness ahead of her third-round meeting with Linda Noskova.
Gauff's Battle with Adversity
When discussing her comeback victory, Gauff remained candid about her ordeal. "I don't know honestly" how she managed to complete the match, she stated. She elaborated: "I think I got what everybody else is having here in Madrid, unfortunately. So, I'm just going to try to push through for tomorrow."
"I did start to feel better, not feeling like I had to throw up. They gave me some pills, so that definitely helped. But I was really tired... the first part was literally just trying to keep whatever I ate down. Once they gave me something to help with that, then I was just nauseous and tired. But I can deal with that."
Gauff's triumph marks her third consecutive appearance in the Madrid fourth round. She will face Czech 13th seed Linda Noskova in her next fixture.
Norrie Advances to Face World Number One
In men's action, Britain's Cameron Norrie delivered an impressive performance to overcome Argentina's Thiago Agustin Tirante 7-5 7-6 (7-5), propelling himself into the fourth round for the first time at the Madrid tournament across his five appearances.
Norrie's reward is a Tuesday showdown against world number one Jannik Sinner, who recorded a commanding 6-2 6-3 victory over Denmark's Elmer Moller. This will represent their first head-to-head meeting on court.
"I'm excited to play him [Sinner] but every time we practice he rips me up. He's probably the most confident player in tennis right now but I just need to play my game. He'll be tough to play against but I'm excited for it."
Sinner arrives in formidable form, maintaining a 19-match winning streak following title triumphs at Indian Wells, the Miami Open, and the Monte Carlo Masters.
Women's Bracket Sees Upset
The women's tournament witnessed an upset as American fifth seed Jessica Pegula fell to Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, ranked 23rd globally, in a one-sided 6-1 6-4 defeat.
