Gates Foundation Initiates Independent Inquiry Into Historical Relationship With Jeffrey Epstein
The Gates Foundation announced this week that it has commissioned an external investigation to examine its previous interactions with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender whose name has surfaced in Justice Department materials connected to the inquiry into the disgraced financier. The move comes as Bill Gates, the sole remaining founder of the organization, faces mounting questions regarding references to him in federal documents.
During a February gathering at the foundation he established alongside his former spouse Melinda French Gates, Gates reportedly discussed his association with Epstein in candid remarks to staff members. The independent examination marks the foundation's most comprehensive public response to date regarding its connections to Epstein, particularly as the organization pursues its mission in maternal and child health as well as disease prevention globally.
Details of the Review
In March, following approval from board chair Bill Gates and independent members of the Governing Board, Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman initiated the external review. The investigation will assess the foundation's previous dealings with Epstein and evaluate current screening procedures for new philanthropic partnerships, according to a statement released by the organization. The Wall Street Journal was the first outlet to disclose details of the internal memo describing the review.
Evidence in Justice Department Files
Materials released by the Justice Department contain email exchanges between Gates and Epstein concerning charitable initiatives, calendar records showing meeting dates between the two individuals, and photographs documenting their presence at the same events. However, Gates has not faced allegations of misconduct related to their connection. He has denied awareness of Epstein's criminal activities and maintained that their meetings were exclusively focused on philanthropic discussions.
The foundation previously acknowledged that "a small number" of its employees met with Epstein, based on his claims regarding his capacity to mobilize substantial charitable resources for global health efforts. The foundation confirmed that no joint fund was ever established and that no financial transfers occurred between the organization and Epstein. In a February statement, the foundation said it "regrets having any employees interact with Epstein in any way."
Broader Institutional Changes
The Gates Foundation has undergone substantial transformations in recent months. The organization revealed in January that it intends to reduce administrative expenditures and eliminate approximately 500 positions—roughly 20 percent of its workforce—by 2030. This reorganization follows a 2023 announcement that the foundation would wind down operations by 2045, accelerating its previously established timeline.
Investor Warren Buffett's Stance
Warren Buffett, one of the foundation's most significant early backers and a regular contributor through annual donations of Berkshire Hathaway shares, is monitoring developments closely. During an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box" the previous month, Buffett stated that it is evident "there was a lot I didn't know."
Buffett, who stepped down from his trustee position in 2021, has consistently made annual contributions near the end of June. Nevertheless, he indicated he would "wait and see what unfolds" as additional Justice Department documents and congressional inquiries examine their contents. He pointed out that the foundation maintains substantial financial reserves, with an endowment valued at $86 billion, and noted that Gates possesses significant personal wealth.
"So, in any event, I'll just wait and see. And there's three and a half million, or whatever it is pages – I mean, it is astounding," Buffett remarked regarding the Epstein files.
A spokesperson for the Gates Foundation responded Wednesday to the Associated Press, characterizing Buffett as "an extraordinarily generous partner" throughout their nearly two-decade collaboration. The statement expressed gratitude for his contributions, which have "enabled us to accelerate progress on some of the world's toughest challenges that would not otherwise have been possible."
Timeline for Results
The Gates Foundation board and leadership team expect to receive preliminary findings from the Epstein review during the summer months. The identities of the third-party investigators conducting the examination have not yet been disclosed publicly.
