Galatasaray Condemns Turkish Referees Over Controversial Derby Display
Turkish football club Galatasaray has leveled sharp criticism at match officials, claiming they harbor "evil inside" them. This statement came just days after the organization severed ties with the Turkish Football Federation.
The Istanbul-based side made the inflammatory accusations on social media during their dominant 3-0 triumph against city rivals Fenerbahce on Sunday. At the interval, with Galatasaray holding a 1-0 advantage, the club posted two messages on X directing their frustration at the refereeing team.
What Galatasaray Said
In their first statement, Galatasaray noted:
"Despite the two penalties not awarded to us, we're closing out the first half 1-0 ahead."
In a more forceful follow-up post, the club declared:
"Despite these referees, we're still leading 1-0. We see what you're doing, your plans, the evil inside you. This order won't go on like this. We're here, we won't be silent! In the end, the good ones will win again!"
Match Details
Victor Osimhen opened the scoring early on, with Baris Yilmaz and Lucas Torreira adding second-half goals to seal a convincing victory. The win moved Galatasaray seven points clear atop the league standings with three matches remaining.
Fenerbahce's afternoon was compounded by two setbacks: a missed penalty in the opening period and the dismissal of goalkeeper Ederson, the former Manchester City player, by referee Yasin Kol. Kol issued a combined 11 yellow cards throughout the derby clash.
Broader Context
Tensions between Turkish Super Lig clubs and refereeing officials have escalated significantly in recent years. In 2023, MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca assaulted referee Halil Umut Meler, prompting a league suspension. Subsequently, in 2024, former Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho received a one-match suspension and faced a fine of approximately £15,000 for questioning official impartiality.
Multiple instances of teams staging walkoffs in protest over controversial decisions have also been recorded. Adding to the crisis, the Turkish Football Federation suspended 149 referees and assistant referees following an investigation that revealed hundreds of professional officials maintained betting accounts.
Galatasaray's latest comments follow an announcement by club president Dursun Aydin Ozbek two days prior, in which he declared that
"all relations with the Turkish Football Federation under its current management have been suspended."
