Galatasaray Condemns Turkish Referees as 'Evil' Following Derby Victory and Federation Rift
The Istanbul club launched a scathing attack on match officials via social media during Sunday's dominant 3-0 win over city rivals Fenerbahce, intensifying an ongoing dispute with Turkey's football authorities.
Galatasaray has levelled serious accusations against Turkish football referees, claiming they possess "evil inside" them, in remarks posted to social media during their impressive victory over Fenerbahce in Sunday's Istanbul derby. The inflammatory comments arrived merely days after the club announced a complete suspension of its relationship with the Turkish Football Federation.
The club took to X platform at half-time when Galatasaray held a 1-0 advantage to air grievances regarding what they characterized as unfair officiating. In their posts, club representatives highlighted two penalty incidents they believed should have been awarded in their favour, expressing frustration with referee Yasin Kol's handling of the match.
"Despite the two penalties not awarded to us, we're closing out the first half 1-0 ahead. Despite these referees, we're still leading 1-0. We see what you're doing, your plans, the evil inside you. This order won't go on like this. We're here, we won't be silent! In the end, the good ones will win again!"
The match concluded with Galatasaray emerging as comprehensive winners, with Victor Osimhen opening the scoring before second-half goals from Baris Yilmaz and Lucas Torreira sealed the result. The victory extended Galatasaray's lead at the summit of the Turkish Super Lig to seven points ahead of Fenerbahce, with three matches remaining in the season.
Fenerbahce's afternoon was further complicated by a red card shown to goalkeeper Ederson by Kol in the second half, while the club also saw a first-half penalty attempt go unused.
Escalating Tensions in Turkish Football
Galatasaray's latest outburst represents the continuation of a long-running conflict between Turkish Super Lig clubs and the sport's officiating standards. Tension between these parties has reached critical levels over recent years, with several high-profile incidents highlighting systemic issues within the game.
In 2023, referee Halil Umut Meler became the focal point of controversy when MKE Ankaragucu club president Faruk Koca physically assaulted him, an incident that subsequently led to the entire league being suspended. The following season brought fresh controversy when former Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho received a one-match suspension and a fine in the region of £15,000 for remarks that appeared to cast doubt on the objectivity of match officials.
Beyond individual incidents, Turkish football has witnessed multiple occasions when teams have walked off the pitch in protest against officiating decisions, underscoring the deep frustration within the sport.
Recent Institutional Problems
Galatasaray's decision to sever ties with the Turkish Football Federation, announced two days prior by club president Dursun Aydin Ozbek, signals the severity of the current crisis. The club's statement made clear that "all relations with the Turkish Football Federation under its current management have been suspended."
This institutional breakdown follows revelations from the previous year when the Turkish Football Federation suspended a total of 149 referees and assistant referees. The suspensions came after an investigation uncovered evidence that hundreds of professional match officials across the country maintained betting accounts, raising serious questions about match integrity.
