From “drone killers” to virtual reality: Air Assault Forces reveal new standards in troop training
The 199th Training Center of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces is using modern virtual reality and computer simulation technologies during basic combined-arms training and specialized instruction.

Colonel Oleksandr Klymenko, Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the 199th Training Center of the Air Assault Forces, said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

“Over the past several years, the training center has been systematically implementing modern training technologies based on virtual reality and computer modeling. The main focus is on integrating simulators into basic combined-arms and specialized training programs,” Klymenko said.

According to him, “Dronobiy” (drone killer) simulators are being actively used to develop stable combat skills without additional ammunition costs. These simulators are designed to train soldiers to engage aerial targets, including UAVs. Anti-tank weapon simulators, specifically the IT-4 and RPG-22 trainers, are also used to recreate real combat conditions. Multimedia shooting ranges help improve firearms training in environments that closely resemble actual battlefield conditions.

To improve the effectiveness of tactical training, the center significantly expanded the use of airsoft equipment starting in 2024. This has enabled intensive exercises at training locations where the use of live weapons is limited or impossible, while also allowing troops to practice small-unit tactics in urban areas and enclosed spaces.

In addition, the center has begun developing laser-based combat simulation systems. In particular, it has significantly expanded its technical base of Lasertag Mainz equipment. The system has been integrated into engineering training (mine-laying and demining simulations), tactical exercises (force-on-force tactical drills with simulated casualty tracking), and firearms training (counter-UAV and FPV drone engagement drills).

The chief of staff added that modern simulator systems have become the foundation of specialized training. Air defense personnel training, including both theoretical and practical courses, has now been fully transferred to specialized simulators, ensuring a high level of proficiency. The use of simulators in training drone operators allows recruits to develop basic piloting, maneuvering, and navigation skills before conducting real flights.

“The introduction of all these tools helps improve personnel training, optimize the use of material resources, and ensure safety during exercises,” the colonel emphasized.

As for the use of ground robotic systems, the training center directly conducts specialized training for unmanned ground vehicle operators. At the end of the basic combined-arms course, cadets participate in a comprehensive tactical exercise during which they are shown how robotic systems can be used for personnel evacuation and logistics missions.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces have also updated their firearms training course.
