FC Basel Forced to Postpone League Match Following Devastating Stadium Fire
FC Basel's Swiss Super League fixture against FC Thun has been postponed after a significant fire damaged the club's St Jakob-Park stadium on Friday evening.
The incident destroyed the first-team dressing facilities, including players' kits and equipment, while also causing substantial damage to coaching offices, medical rooms, and technical facilities. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the fire, though authorities have yet to determine its cause.
Match Postponement
The fourth-placed Basel side were scheduled to travel to league leaders FC Thun for Saturday's encounter. However, the club confirmed the trip would be impossible due to the extent of the damage and the unavailability of essential game and medical equipment.
"The fire, which was accompanied by heavy smoke, caused considerable destruction and completely demolished the entire locker room area of the first team," FC Basel stated. "Given the damage sustained and the lack of usable game and medical equipment, the away match against FC Thun cannot proceed for FCB."
The Swiss Super League has already approved the postponement, and discussions regarding a new fixture date are underway.
Historic Venue
St Jakob-Park is one of European football's most prestigious stadiums, having hosted the 2016 Europa League final between Liverpool and Sevilla, as well as the 2025 Women's Euros final featuring England and Spain.
