Father and Four Children Escape Deadly House Fire in Blue Mountains; Two Bodies Found

Human remains discovered at a residence in Bowen Mountain following an overnight blaze that claimed two lives, while four other children and their father were hospitalised with smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

Incident Details

A devastating fire consumed a family home in Bowen Mountain, located in the foothills of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, during the early morning hours of Monday. The residence housed six children, ranging in age from three to sixteen years old, along with their father, a man in his thirties. While four of the children and their father managed to escape the flames, two bodies were subsequently recovered from inside the property.

The family had been preparing to relocate to Queensland on Monday, with the children's mother already en route to their new residence at the time of the fire. Emergency services received a distress call at approximately 2.10am, with firefighting crews arriving within five to eight minutes.

Emergency Response

Approximately sixty firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service were deployed to combat the blaze. According to NSW Fire and Rescue Assistant Commissioner Andrew Faunce during a Monday morning press briefing, the fire had already reached an advanced stage when emergency personnel arrived.

"We had a very, very fully developed fire at the point in time, and with structural collapse already occurring through the roof cavity it was just deemed too unsafe for firefighters to make entry, to conduct any kind of rescue or search at that point in time," Faunce explained.

"Firefighters at the time deployed some defensive measures and started to bring the fire under control… And then after about 3.30am this morning firefighters went into a more of an offensive searching of the premises as well."

Neighbours also made attempts to assist before professional firefighters arrived at the scene.

Investigation Findings

Police Superintendent Nadine Roberts confirmed that two bodies were recovered from the property—one located upstairs and one downstairs—and are believed to be those of two children. She noted that formal identification would be conducted as part of a coronial investigation.

The four surviving children and their father were transported to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burns. Roberts stated that aside from these injuries, the survivors were in stable condition. The mother was making her way back to reunite with her family.

Investigators concluded that the fire was not being treated as suspicious as of late Monday morning. The precise cause of the blaze remained under investigation.

Official Statement

Superintendent Roberts extended condolences to those affected by the tragedy. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, with the siblings and with the broader community," she said. "It's an incredibly confronting situation, not only for the community and the families but also the first responders who had to attend."
