Fallout Co-Creator Tim Cain Exits Online Forums, Citing Rise of 'Anger-Forward' Gaming Culture
In an April 22 YouTube video titled "Why I Don't Post On Forums Anymore," veteran game developer Tim Cain revealed his decision to abandon online gaming communities, attributing the shift to increasingly hostile discourse that undermines productive dialogue between creators and players.
A Shift From Constructive Conversation to Hostility
Cain, who co-created the original Fallout series, described a marked transformation in how gamers engage in online spaces. "I used to post on Usenet sites all the time," he recalled, referencing his participation in the pre-World Wide Web discussion platforms during the 1990s when he was actively working on Fallout. "All this slowed down about 15 years ago and pretty much stopped."
The primary culprit, according to Cain, is the pervasive negativity that now characterizes forum interactions. "They're anger-forward," he observed, explaining that while some frustrated users existed even in the early internet era, constructive problem-solving was still possible. "Way back in Usenet, you can find people who were upset because they couldn't get Fallout to install," he noted, but added that developers and players could collaboratively reach satisfactory resolutions.
The Problem With 'Liking to Hate Things'
Cain expressed particular concern about what he perceives as a cultural trend within gaming communities. "It just seems like a lot of people want to hate things," he said. "That's what they like. They seem to like hating things, which confuses me."
The developer argues this dynamic proves counterproductive for the entire industry. "That kind of environment, I don't think is conducive to getting better games," Cain stated, lamenting the loss of substantive exchanges. "I used to have these great conversations with people on forums. Now that's all gone. It's all boiled down to, 'This is stupid, this person's lazy, this is all woke.' And it doesn't lead anywhere."
A Bittersweet Departure
Having concluded that online forums no longer serve as viable sources of meaningful feedback, Cain has officially withdrawn from these spaces. "I just tapped out. And, that's sad. Because those conversations are now lost," he concluded, underscoring his resignation to the current state of gaming discourse.
