Europe’s 3 Most Spectacular Lake Destinations For A Summer Vacation
If we're being honest…many lakes across the U.S. just don't hold a candle to our amazing beaches.
While there are a few select spots like Tahoe and just about anywhere in Wisconsin and Michigan, oftentimes you'll find brackish waters that conjure thoughts of escaping to the coast.
Europe is a different playing field.

Many travelers scope out the Amalfi Coast and Greek Islands, but there are equally beautiful alpine lakes scattered across numerous countries, exuding an icy blue sheen that some of the most renowned beach towns can't match.
Fellow experts at Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights) just revealed Europe's 3 most spectacular lake getaways for a summer escape, so grab your passport, check entry requirements, and review current safety levels for a seamless trip across the pond.
PLUS: We've created an interactive quiz for you at the end of this article to find your perfect match!
Lake Garda: Italy's Perfect Lake Como Dupe

It's not that Lake Como isn't worth visiting; it's that it puts a beating on your bank account and doesn't exactly ooze authentic Italian vibes, no matter how beautiful the scenery may be or how delicious the wine and pizza are.
Without household recognition, especially to Americans, Lake Garda is still clinging to “hidden gem” status, while locals from Italy and nearby countries have done their best to keep it on the down low.
Does anybody still say “down low”?
I'm old…
What else is old (in a more charming way than my ever-growing gray beard) is Lake Garda's medieval townscape, straddling Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige, with Roman ruins nearby.

Not to mention this is Italy's largest lake, so even if it does become more popular, you still have ample room to find your own slice of paradise.
Come summertime, bathwater conditions are great for swimming, and patios are still breezy enough to enjoy a sun-kissed meal.
Better yet, you can still fly into Milan and reach Lake Garda with ease just as most do to visit more popular Lake Como.

Lake Bled: The Most Sought-After Photo Op In Europe

Proposing any time soon?
No pressure — but if you are — you're not alone scoping out the perfect place to set forth the rest of your life.
Lake Bled isn't just a mega popular place to “pop the question,” but it is claimed to be the most sought-after spot to simply snap a photo — it's that gorgeous.
Slovenia may not typically be on your Bingo card unless you're a Luka Doncic fan like me, but being next-door to Italy, it's not as off-path as you might think, and it's very affordable across the board.
Lake Bled is the highlight of the country, bringing in more tourism than its low-key capital, Ljubljana, which I still struggle to pronounce.

This glacial lake famed for Bled Castle perched cliffside with an immaculate backdrop of the Julian Alps and the Church of the Assumption on a tiny isolated island, smack dab in the center of the lake is as storybook as Europe gets — and I've been to some true fairytale gems.
Like Garda, waters may look icy with its striking blue hues, but they are indeed warm enough to enjoy a dip in the summer.

Interlaken: Switzerland's Alpine Wonder
Travelers always find themselves in a juxtaposition when visiting Switzerland.

On one hand, it's one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
On the other hand, your bank account will take a pounding, as our data shows hotels are $280 per night on the low end.
Then, of course, there's a reason world-famous chef and world traveler Anthony Bourdain refused to ever set foot here: because of a morbid fear of everything Swiss.
The Sound of Music really did a number on him…
That said, you just have to prepare a bit more to visit such a pricey destination, but there's no denying it lives up to the old adage, “you get what you pay for”.

Beyond its elegant streetscape, Interlaken is touted by Going as Europe's top lake getaway for thrill-seekers, where you can partake in such activities as:
- Paragliding
- Skydiving
- Whitewater Rafting
- Mountain Biking
- Canyoning
Swimming too — there are numerous sunbathing beaches, river baths, and open-air pools.
Even if you're more of a laid-back traveler who lets others risk filing a travel insurance claim, making your way to Jungfraujoch is a must for it's unparalleled views hence its nickname the “Top of Europe”.
Before we sign off, here's a piece of advice from the Travel Off Path team: make sure you snag a Swiss Travel Pass to cover nationwide transit (including boats).
