Tesla Maintains Bitcoin Holdings at 11,509 BTC Amid $173 Million Asset Impairment
Elon Musk's electric vehicle manufacturer reported no changes to its cryptocurrency portfolio in Q1 2026, while booking a substantial after-tax loss on its digital assets as bitcoin valuations declined sharply.
Tesla's bitcoin reserve remained static at 11,509 BTC during the first quarter of 2026, according to the company's latest earnings disclosure. The holdings, valued at approximately $880 million at current bitcoin prices near $78,000 per unit, generated an after-tax impairment loss of $173 million as the leading cryptocurrency retreated during the opening months of the year.
The decline in asset value reflected bitcoin's significant pullback from approximately $90,000 at the beginning of 2026 to roughly $68,000 by the close of March, representing a substantial erosion of the company's digital asset portfolio.
Mixed Financial Performance
Tesla delivered earnings results that exceeded Wall Street expectations while falling short on revenue targets. The company reported first-quarter revenue of $22.39 billion, trailing analyst projections of $22.71 billion. However, earnings per share came in at $0.41, surpassing consensus forecasts of $0.37.
The mixed results sparked investor optimism, with Tesla stock climbing 4% in after-hours trading following the earnings announcement.
Tesla's Bitcoin Acquisition History
Tesla's involvement with bitcoin spans several years. The company first entered the cryptocurrency market in February 2021, acquiring 43,200 BTC for approximately $1.5 billion. A month later, Tesla divested roughly 10% of its position, selling approximately 4,320 BTC to evaluate market liquidity conditions.
The company subsequently reduced its holdings to 9,720 BTC by July 2022 during the prolonged cryptocurrency bear market. A modest acquisition in January 2025 increased the portfolio to its current level of 11,509 BTC, where it has remained unchanged since that transaction.
