The Minister for Foreign Affairs for Ukraine recently shared on X that five buses were given to Ukraine by Azerbaijan. One news source stated they are electric buses.

Here is the full text of his post: “During this visit, Azerbaijan has provided five passenger buses to Ukraine as humanitarian assistance for the needs of our communities.

“Since 2022, Azerbaijan has repeatedly made its contribution to supporting the Ukrainian people. In particular, it has provided more than $45 million in humanitarian aid, including high-capacity generators, transformers, and critical equipment that help keep our energy system running under constant attacks.

“Equally important is the support for our children. More than 500 Ukrainian children have taken part in recovery programs on the territory of Azerbaijan – something especially precious in times of war.

“We deeply value this solidarity, because it helps Ukraine stand firm and move forward.”

Buses are needed in Ukraine to transport displaced persons and because there is a bus shortage. More school buses are needed as well.

During a protracted war, one may not at first consider what happens to transportation because the emphasis would be on the conflict and its mortality and injuries. However, transportation is an essential activity and it has been disrupted. “Mobility has emerged as a central challenge for restoring economic dynamism to mid-tier cities. The war has disrupted traditional supply chains and mobility patterns while often making routine activities such as transporting children to school extraordinarily challenging. Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have undermined electrified transit and commuter trains. The military has mobilized both buses and drivers.”

On the surface, it would not seem buses would matter much, but they do. In fact, millions of euros have already been donated to support Ukrainian transit. “The investment will deliver buses, dual trolleybuses and trams to the cities, ensuring resilient, reliable and sustainable transportation for businesses and residents.”
