Diplomatic Breakdown: Iran Attacks Three Ships in Hormuz as US Blockade Intensifies

Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have reached an impasse, with Iran refusing to return to the negotiating table unless the United States lifts its naval embargo on Iranian ports. Simultaneously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched strikes against multiple vessels transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, seizing two cargo ships amid mounting regional tensions.

The escalatory incidents unfolded less than 24 hours after US President Donald Trump extended a fragile ceasefire agreement while maintaining America's blockade of Iranian maritime commerce. The international community has repeatedly called for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement to resolve the broader conflict.

Maritime Attacks Intensify Regional Crisis

The IRGC targeted three vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, with two subsequently seized and escorted toward Iranian territory. According to Iranian media reports, the Liberian-flagged Epaminondas and the MSC Francesca were brought under Iranian control. Technomar, the management company for the Epaminondas, confirmed that the vessel was "approached and fired upon by a manned gunboat" near the Omani coast, sustaining damage to its bridge.

A second cargo ship came under fire hours later and was halted in the water, though no structural damage was reported. The IRGC also attacked a third vessel, the Euphoria, which reportedly became stranded on the Iranian coast. Crew members from all three ships were unharmed.

Panama condemned the seizure of its flagged vessel, characterizing the incident as an "illegal seizure" and describing it as a "serious attack" on global maritime security.

The Strategic Waterway at Breaking Point

The standoff between the two nations has effectively halted nearly all Iranian exports through the strait, which carries approximately 20% of the world's oil supply during peacetime. More than 30 vessels have come under attack in the Middle East since the US and Israel launched military operations on 28 February following a surprise offensive against Iran. Prior to the conflict, the strait remained open to all maritime traffic.

The ongoing blockade has triggered global economic repercussions. Brent crude oil prices have surged to over $100 per barrel, representing roughly a 40% increase from pre-war levels. The European Union's energy commissioner, Dan Jørgensen, warned of sustained economic consequences, estimating that the disruption costs Europe approximately €500 million daily—comparable to major energy crises of the past 50 years.

Stalled Negotiations Over Blockade Terms

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the ship seizures did not breach the truce agreement, noting that the captured vessels were "not US or Israeli."

Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Iran's parliament speaker and chief negotiator, met with US Vice President JD Vance in Pakistan earlier this month. Qalibaf declared that a comprehensive ceasefire "only makes sense" if accompanied by an end to Washington's port blockade. "Reopening the Strait of Hormuz is impossible with such flagrant breach of the ceasefire," he stated on social media.

Iranian leadership has made the complete dismantling of the US Navy blockade a precondition for resuming negotiations. However, President Trump insisted on Wednesday that the blockade will remain in effect until Iran removes its restrictions on maritime passage through the critical waterway.

Disputed Claims Over Executions

Trump claimed on Wednesday that Iran had honored his request to cancel the executions of eight Iranian women arrested during anti-government protests in January. "I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution," he wrote on Truth Social.

Tehran dismissed the assertion as a "fabrication" and an attempt to "save face." Iranian officials stated the women were never scheduled for execution. Mizan, the news agency affiliated with Iran's judiciary, characterized the claim as evidence of "Trump's empty-handedness in the battlefield" pushing him to manufacture "achievements from false news."

Israeli Strikes Undermine Lebanese Ceasefire

Three separate Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon on Wednesday killed at least six people and wounded others, contradicting a 10-day ceasefire agreement entered into by both nations. Israel denied responsibility for one strike and provided no immediate comment on the others.

Lebanese health authorities reported that two Israeli strikes on the village of al-Tiri killed three individuals, including a newspaper correspondent, and injured one additional journalist. The ministry stated that Israeli forces fired upon an ambulance, preventing emergency responders from accessing the area.

A separate strike on the village of Yohmor resulted in two deaths and two injuries. Israel claimed residents of al-Tiri violated the ceasefire and posed a threat to Israeli forces. Israeli officials denied impeding rescue operations or deliberately targeting journalists.

Since the outbreak of hostilities, Israeli operations across Lebanon have resulted in nearly 2,300 deaths and displaced more than 1.2 million people, according to the latest Lebanese government data.

Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors are scheduled to meet in Washington on Thursday to discuss extending the fragile ceasefire, which has created preliminary conditions for potential US-Iran negotiations aimed at ending the broader regional conflict.
