DeChambeau Signals Commitment to LIV Golf Amid Financial Uncertainty

BBC Sport 0 переглядів 2 хв читання

Two-time Major champion Bryson DeChambeau has reaffirmed his dedication to LIV Golf, vowing to remain with the breakaway tour despite mounting concerns over its long-term viability.

The pledge comes as reports from last week raised questions about whether Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund will continue bankrolling the controversial circuit, potentially threatening its survival beyond the current year.

Staying the Course Despite Doubts

While LIV Golf leadership has maintained that operations continue normally, senior European golf insiders have indicated to BBC Sport that they anticipate the tour will cease functioning after this season.

The 32-year-old American, widely recognized as one of professional golf's marquee attractions, is reportedly seeking a $500 million (£370 million) contract renewal when his existing deal expires. According to reports, this figure underscores his substantial market value within the sport.

DeChambeau's Resolve

In comments to Flushing It Golf, DeChambeau outlined his approach to his contractual situation and the tour's challenges:

"As long as LIV is here, I would figure out a way for it to make sense. We're still working on a potential contract. I haven't given up on that and I think there will be a solution. But as of right now, my job is to help make the league work after this year."

He emphasized his sense of responsibility toward the venture, noting that he has invested considerable effort into building the league. DeChambeau characterized the current situation as an inevitable challenge facing any startup operation.

"It's a start-up, right? And so there's going to be times where we're squeezed and punched. This is one of those moments. But I'm going to do everything in my power to make it work and I really see the value in franchise golf."

Background

DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open winner (2020, 2024), joined the ranks of elite golfers who defected to LIV Golf following its 2022 debut. The tour disrupted professional golf by offering record financial packages to lure established stars away from the traditional PGA Tour.
