CIA Officers Killed in Mexico Trigger Diplomatic Standoff Over Covert Operations
The deaths of two American intelligence operatives following a drug laboratory raid in northern Mexico have ignited a significant diplomatic dispute between Mexico City and Washington, with President Claudia Sheinbaum asserting that her government had no knowledge of their involvement in the operation.
During a press briefing, Sheinbaum expressed grave concerns about what she characterized as a serious violation of security protocols. She stated that Mexican defense officials participating in the raid targeting a drug manufacturing facility were kept entirely in the dark regarding the presence of foreign nationals at the scene.
"The Defence Ministry was completely unaware that individuals involved in this operation were not Mexican citizens and were not affiliated with our state security agencies," Sheinbaum declared on Wednesday. Sources with knowledge of the incident have since confirmed that the two deceased Americans were employed by the Central Intelligence Agency.
The Mexican president underscored the severity of the breach, noting that her nation's foreign minister had transmitted a formal communication to the United States ambassador seeking clarification and reaffirming established bilateral security protocols. "This is something that should not be taken lightly," Sheinbaum emphasized.
In response, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Wednesday that Sheinbaum should have expressed "sympathy" regarding the deaths of the American operatives. However, Leavitt acknowledged Mexico's collaborative efforts with the United States in combating narcotics trafficking across their shared border.
Leavitt further indicated that President Donald Trump remains committed to deepening bilateral cooperation in counternarcotics operations.
