Clayface: Horror Reimagining of DC Villain Hits Theaters October 2026

James Gunn's DC Universe is venturing into dark, unsettling territory with Clayface, a forthcoming superhero thriller that marks a significant tonal departure for the studio. The film will arrive in cinemas on October 23, 2026, serving as the third installment in the DCU's inaugural chapter, following Superman and Supergirl.

The project underwent scheduling adjustments, originally targeting a September 2026 release before being repositioned to arrive during the autumn season.

Creative Team and Horror Direction

The film brings substantial horror credentials to the superhero genre, with acclaimed screenwriter Mike Flanagan crafting the script and director James Watkins—known for The Woman in Black—helming the project. Gunn emphasized the film's distinctive approach to the DCU framework, stating: "Although it's in the same universe, it's a complete horror film. That's one of the things we want to do... there's not a company style. It's not like every movie is going to be like Superman."

Cast and Characters

The ensemble cast features:

  • Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen/Clayface (lead role)
  • Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Bates
  • Max Minghella
  • Eddie Marsan
  • David Dencik

Harries, recognized from White Lines and Doctor Who, anchors the production alongside supporting players from major franchises including Star Wars and The Handmaid's Tale.

Plot and Body Horror Elements

The narrative draws inspiration from multiple comic book origin stories, following an actor who pursues drastic measures after sustaining severe facial injuries in a catastrophic accident. Seeking assistance from an unconventional scientist, Hagen's transformation takes an unexpected turn, ultimately converting him into a shapeshifting entity composed of malleable matter.

The film intentionally embraces body horror aesthetics. Minghella confirmed the visceral direction: "I think I can say safely it's going there. It's a proper movie. It's a really fantastic script."

Trailer and Visuals

The official teaser, released on April 22, 2026, showcases Hagen's grotesque metamorphosis from conventionally attractive leading man to accident victim to a fluid, transformable entity. The preview demonstrates a notably distinct aesthetic from the studio's previous superhero offerings, establishing an atmospheric departure from the established DCU visual language.

Speculation and Connections

Online speculation emerged regarding potential links to Robert Pattinson's The Batman films following set photographs displaying relevant iconography. Gunn has dismissed these connections to the alternative continuity property.
