Claire Danes is staying in business with Netflix.

The multiple Emmy winner, coming off the streamer’s The Beast in Me, is set to star in a series called Lovesick. Netflix won a competitive bidding process by giving the show, from showrunner Sarah Treem (The Affair), a straight-to-series order.

Based on an Israeli series title The Best Worst Thing, Lovesick is described as a “sweeping, modern romantic epic.” Danes (who also executive produces) will play Annika, “a renowned breast cancer surgeon, has just received her own cancer diagnosis,” per the show’s logline. “Her new patient, Nate, is a promising politician. The series explores their interwoven lives, delving into themes of love, sex, illness, death, family, children, health, medicine, and the meaning of life — all while Annika is simultaneously undergoing breast cancer treatment.”

“I’m thrilled to get to tell this story with the genius Claire Danes,” Treem said in a statement. “We’ve been looking for something to do together for a very long time and this character, Annika, is perhaps a mix of both of our wildest dreams. To get to tell a story about all the things keeping me up at night anyway — life, death, children, love, middle-age, courage, science and faith — is an extraordinary opportunity I don’t take lightly in these turbulent times. We’re very grateful to Netflix for this significant commitment and we cannot wait to get going.”

Treem is writing and will executive produce Lovesick with Danes and Avi Nir and Keren Shahar of Keshet Studios and Peter Traugott. Universal Television and Keshet are the studios. (Of note: Netflix also streams a Korean drama titled Lovesick, and a series from Mexico with the same title is set to debut later this year. A British comedy also called Lovesick previously streamed on Netflix.)

In addition to The Beast in Me, Danes’ recent series work includes Fleishman Is in Trouble, Full Circle and Apple TV’s The Essex Serpent. She is repped by WME, Signpost Management and Ziffren Brittenham.

Treem next has FX’s drama Cry Wolf, starring Olivia Colman and Brie Larson. Prior to creating The Affair with Hagai Levi, she worked as a writer and producer on In Treatment and House of Cards. She is repped by CAA and Johnson Shapiro.
