China Breaks Solar Export Record with 68 GW Shipment in March Amid Global Energy Crisis
China's solar photovoltaic exports reached an all-time high in March, driven by accelerating global demand as nations seek to reduce their dependence on conventional energy sources amid international tensions.
According to analysis by Ember, the world's leading clean electricity data platform, China exported 68 gigawatts of solar capacity in March alone. This figure represents a doubling of February's export volume and exceeds the previous record of 49% that was established in August 2025. To contextualize the magnitude of this achievement, the monthly shipment equates to Spain's entire installed solar generation capacity.
Market Drivers
The sharp uptick in solar exports coincides with turbulent global energy markets, particularly following escalating tensions between the United States and Israel with Iran. These geopolitical developments have triggered significant increases in crude oil and natural gas prices, prompting governments and energy markets to aggressively seek renewable energy alternatives. Solar technology has emerged as the primary focus in this transition.
Global Demand Surge
The surge in Chinese solar exports reflects widespread international appetite for renewable energy infrastructure. During March 2026, a total of 50 countries achieved record-high imports of Chinese solar panels, while an additional 60 nations recorded their strongest import volumes in the preceding six months. The most substantial growth occurred in geographic regions with the highest vulnerability to volatile fossil fuel pricing.
