DCU's Clayface Emerges as First Full-Fledged Horror Entry, Trailer Unveils Disturbing Body-Horror Elements
The inaugural teaser for Clayface has arrived, presenting what appears to be the DC Universe's most ambitious venture into genuine horror territory under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The footage introduces Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, a film actor whose life takes a catastrophic turn following a brutal assault that leaves him severely disfigured. Desperate for salvation, Hagen seeks help from an unconventional scientist whose experimental treatment initially appears promising. However, the remedy gradually transforms him into something far more sinister—a being composed of clay capable of shape-shifting.
A Departure in Tone
Set within the DCU's rendition of Gotham City, the trailer showcases Hagen bandaged and hospitalized, his bloodied eye gazing directly at the viewer. Paired with an unsettling rendition of The Flaming Lips' 'Do You Realize??', the sequence contrasts Hagen's glamorous acting career with his harrowing transformation, culminating in disturbing depictions of his skin melting and dripping across his face.
Tonally, this production stands in sharp contrast to companion DCU properties Superman and Supergirl, potentially marking superhero cinema's closest approach to uncompromised horror storytelling.
Cast and Creative Leadership
The film features Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlyn Corr, Hagen's romantic partner, and Max Minghella from The Handmaid's Tale in supporting roles. Eddie Marsan appears in an as-yet-unnamed capacity, potentially portraying one of Hagen's alternate forms.
Behind the production, Mike Flanagan—known for The Haunting of Hill House—authored the screenplay, while James Watkins, director of Speak No Evil, helms the project.
What's Next for the DCU
Clayface arrives as the DCU continues its restructuring, following the 2025 release of Superman and the imminent arrival of Supergirl this summer. Development is already underway on Superman: Man of Tomorrow, the planned sequel to the flagship superhero film.
