Specialist Children's Shoe Shops Closing at Alarming Rate, Experts Warn of Growing Foot Health Crisis

Retailers and Podiatrists Sound Alarm Over Decline in Professional Fitting Services

Footwear specialists are raising concerns about a significant deterioration in children's foot health, attributing the problem to the widespread closure of dedicated shoe retailers across Great Britain. Industry experts argue that parents are increasingly turning to online shopping and DIY fitting methods as brick-and-mortar stores disappear, potentially causing long-term damage to young people's developing feet.

According to analysis by property firm Green Street, more than 1,000 shoe shops have shuttered in Great Britain since 2020. As major retailers have scaled back their physical presence and independent shops have closed their doors, many parents are now purchasing footwear for their children through online channels.

Professional Fitting Services Becoming Increasingly Inaccessible

Research conducted by Footwear Hub reveals a stark picture: some parents must travel up to 50 miles to access professional shoe fitting services. Nadia Arden-Scott, co-founder of Footwear Hub, stated: "Parents have been led to believe that fitting shoes is simple and can be done at home, when the reality is that do-it-yourself shoe fitting is potentially causing long-term damage to their child's feet."

The not-for-profit organization, comprised of 40 specialist shoe shops, has launched the "fit well, grow well" campaign to address what members describe as a concerning decline in children's foot health. The initiative provides free guidance through its website and directs families to fitting services across the United Kingdom.

Medical Community Warns of Serious Consequences

Podiatrists caution that ill-fitting footwear can result in lifelong foot problems and contribute to complications affecting the ankles, knees, and back. Potential complications include fallen arches, hammer and claw toes, bunions, and various muscular issues.

Jill Ferrari, a podiatrist and academic, explained the developmental dimension of the problem: "Young people's feet continue to grow until mid-teens and poorly fitting footwear can lead to toe deformities, poor foot function and reduced gait efficiency. In younger children, poor footwear choices can increase the risk of tripping and falling."

Bunions—bony lumps that develop on the side of the foot—represent one condition gaining prominence among young people. While genetic predisposition plays a role, ill-fitting shoes are identified as a significant aggravating factor.

Industry Professionals Report Alarming Trends

Professional shoe fitters involved in the campaign have identified a troubling pattern: an increasing number of children are wearing shoes that are too small or too narrow. Tanya Marriott, co-founder of Footwear Hub and a professional shoe fitter with 22 years of experience who operates SoleLution in Portishead, Somerset, has observed a marked rise in the number of young patients presenting with bunions.

Marriott emphasized the broader implications: "What we are seeing is deeply concerning. Unlike other clothing, shoes directly affect how children move, develop and grow, and the consequences of a poor fit can last a lifetime."

Researchers from Footwear Hub have documented instances where children with existing foot conditions—including toe deformities and structural differences—are failing to receive appropriate specialist fitting support.

Call for Parental Awareness

Specialists are advocating for a fundamental shift in how parents approach children's footwear. Arden-Scott, who manages ShuZu, a children's shoe shop in Farnborough, argued: "We want parents to value their children's feet the way they value their teeth and eyes. They would not skip a dentist appointment because they thought they could check their own child's teeth at home."
