Channeling its inner Silksong, Subnautica 2 causes a chain reaction and pushes a second game to move its release date early

Subnautica 2 is really channeling its inner Hollow Knight Silksong by shoving not one, but two games out of their original release dates that don't want to be swept up in the impending tidal wave.

Earlier this week, the developers behind another anticipated open-world survival game called Outbound had to move their release date from May 14 to May 11 on PC and Xbox to avoid getting in the way of Subnautica 2's soon-to-be huge Early Access launch, despite the camper van adventure itself courting lots of attention and well over a million Steam Wishlists.

The problem? That May 11 release date had actually belonged to, yes, another crafty simulation game, Farm to Table, a restaurant management sim with base-building and farming elements. What started out as a friendly move has now turned into release date dominoes.

"Followed by [Subnautica 2] recent date reveal, [Outbound] recently announced its new release date, which now falls exactly on our planned Early Access launch date," the solo developer of Farm to Table tweets. "We're genuinely excited for both games, but we also want our players to have a more relaxed launch experience and enjoy Farm to Table without feeling rushed between big releases."

I'm not sure two days is really enough time to have a more chill dinner service, but the dev has "decided it would be better to open our restaurant doors a little earlier" on May 9 instead.

Hollow Knight Silksong had previously strong-armed at least eight games out of their original release dates - no surprise there, it was Steam's most-wishlisted game at the time. But Subnautica 2 seems to be following in its footsteps as Steam's most-wishlisted game since the hit, bug-infested Metroidvania.

Subnautica 2 devs won't touch generative AI despite "AI first" pivot at owner Krafton: "It's interesting technology, but it's not something we're using."
