Cargo ship carrying tons of soda for Ukraine sinks off Greek island

The Independent — World Angeliki Koutantou 1 переглядів 1 хв читання

All nine crew members of a cargo ship that struck rocks and subsequently sank off the Greek island of Andros have been successfully rescued, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The Vanuatu-flagged freighter, identified as Corsage C, was transporting hundreds of metric tons of soda from Albania to Ukraine when the incident occurred.

The cause of the vessel running aground remains unclear.

However, a Greek shipping ministry official, speaking anonymously, stated that while no visible signs of pollution were immediately apparent, two anti-pollution coast guard vessels, alongside two others carrying specialised equipment, would preemptively deploy a sea barrier.

The dramatic rescue saw two crew members pulled from the sea, while the remaining seven were recovered from a rocky area on Andros.

All eight Turkish and one Azerbaijani national were reported to be in good health after being transported to the island's clinic for assessment.

The ship's captain confirmed that every individual on board was accounted for following the incident.
