Cannes Title ‘Aquí,’ Based on J. M. Coetzee’s ‘Jesus Trilogy,’ Picked Up by Films Boutique (EXCLUSIVE)

Films Boutique has picked up sales rights to “Aquí,” which debuts in the Cannes Premiere section. The film is directed by Tiago Guedes, and is based on J.M. Coetzee’s “Jesus Trilogy.”
Guedes previously directed “The Domain,” which played in Venice competition in 2019.
The film stars Manolo Solo (“The Good Boss,” “Close Your Eyes”), Patricia López Arnaiz (“20,000 Species of Bees”), this year’s best actress Goya winner for “Sundays,” Sergi López (“Sirat,” “Pan’s Labyrinth”) and Lambert Wilson (“Of Gods and Men,” “The Matrix Resurrections”), and introduces Álex Peláez and Hugo Encuentra.
It is set in a new land where everyone receives a new name and begins again without a past. Here, Simón takes responsibility for David, a child he met on the crossing to a new life. Driven by an inexplicable conviction, he sets out to find the boy’s mother despite the fact David remembers nothing about her. When he recognizes Inés as the right woman, she accepts the role and an unlikely bond forms between them. While society imposes rules and treats difference as a threat, David resists being shaped and stands for imagination and freedom.

The screenplay is by Guedes and Luís Araújo, based on Coetzee’s “Jesus Trilogy.” Coetzee, who is the recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature and winner of the Booker Prize twice, will attend Cannes to support the film.

The producer is Paulo Branco, the executive producer is Ana Pinhão Moura, and the associate producer is Carlos Bedran.
Cinematography is by Daniela Cajías, production design is by Meral Aktan, and editing is by Jackie Bastide and Tiago Augusto. The choreographers are Sofia Dias and Vítor Roriz.
The film is produced by A Leopardo Filmes in Portugal, in co-production with RTP Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, Alfama Films in France and APM in Portugal. The associate producers are Belino Production (Spain), CB Partners (France), and Filmgalerie 451 (Germany).
