The numbers for the 4th month of the year have come in, and BYD keeps getting into a deeper hole. Its passenger vehicle sales were down significantly year over year — its plugin hybrid sales were down, and its BEV sales were down even more. Its commercial vehicle business wasn’t even able to come in and save the day this time. Let’s roll through all of these. (Note: There are static images at the end of the article if you prefer those over the embedded charts.)

Overall, BYD’s passenger vehicle sales were down 15.7% year over year, a pretty significant drop. They declined from 372,615 in April 2025 to 314,100 in April 2026. The plus side is that they were up 6.2% month over month, going from 295,693 deliveries in March to 314,100 in April.

BYD’s BEV passenger vehicle sales dropped even more, 19.8% year over year. They went from 195,740 in April 2025 to 156,944 in April 2026. Again, though, they were up month over month, by 6.3%.

On the PHEV side, BYD’s registrations dropped 11.1%, going from 176,875 in April 2025 to 157,156 in April 2026. Continuing the trend, though, they were up 6.1% month over month.

Overall, though, it was another down month for BYD, and it’s getting harder and harder for the automaker to pull itself out of the deep pit it’s been putting itself into. The company will have to see significant sales growth in the remainder of the year if it is to turn 2026 into a net-positive sales year.

On the commercial vehicle side of the business, we have one positive year over year — in its electric bus business. Ironically, it’s also the only negative from BYD month over month. While sales were up 11.7% year over year, from 394 to 440, they were down 33.6% month over month, from a superb 663 in March.

When it comes to non-bus commercial vehicles, it was a very different story. Sales dropped 7% year over year, going from 7,080 in April 2025 to 6,583 in April 2026. However, they were up a whopping 70.3% month over month — going from 3,866 to the aforementioned 6,583 sales.
