Big Bang Theory Spinoff 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' Unveiled at CCXP Mexico City

The cast of the highly anticipated Big Bang Theory spinoff revealed the first images and details about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe during a panel presentation at CCXP Mexico City. The new series, heading to HBO Max in July, brings together Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie in a blend of comedy and science fiction.

The project centers on Sussman reprising his role as Stuart Bloom, the comic book store owner who became a familiar face on the original CBS series. The spinoff follows Stuart as he attempts to repair reality after accidentally destroying a device created by Leonard and Sheldon, inadvertently triggering a multiverse catastrophe.

Plot and Character Details

Stuart finds himself in an unexpected leadership position as he embarks on a mission to save the universe. Joining him on this chaotic journey are his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist buddy Bert (Posehn), and the perpetually irritating quantum physicist Barry Kripke (Bowie). The storyline introduces alternate-universe iterations of characters from the original series.

During the panel, Posehn emphasized the show's comedic appeal, noting that "the fun is watching him fail every week." Sussman revealed that the spinoff will explore the romantic development between Stuart and Denise, explaining that "when The Big Bang Theory ended, our relationship was just budding, and now you can see where it goes."

Sussman acknowledged that his character takes on significant responsibility in the new series but admitted, "He's not very good at it." The actor emphasized the challenge of playing someone far removed from his comfort zone.

Production Details

HBO Max announced that acclaimed composer Danny Elfman will compose an original theme song for the series. The show is created by Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn and Bill Prady, who also serve as writers and executive producers. Production comes through Chuck Lorre Productions in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.

The original The Big Bang Theory concluded in 2019 after 12 seasons. The franchise has previously spawned Young Sheldon, which ended in 2024 following seven seasons, and its spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, currently in its second season on CBS.
