Bethesda Presented Obsidian with Damaging PowerPoint on New Vegas Failures, Developer Recalls

Publisher's critical presentation left lasting impression on studio

During a recent extensive interview, senior designer Chris Avellone from Obsidian Entertainment revealed that Bethesda management presented the development team with a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation detailing what the publisher viewed as failures related to Fallout: New Vegas. According to Avellone, the presentation was not limited to discussing the game's downloadable content, but rather provided a full accounting of perceived missteps by Obsidian during the project's development and post-launch period.

Although Fallout: New Vegas has since earned recognition as arguably the strongest entry in the franchise and enjoys a devoted fanbase, the 2010 release initially struggled to achieve universal acclaim. Technical issues and mixed player reception toward later expansions contributed to a lukewarm launch, establishing the title as more of a delayed success for the series than an immediate triumph.

Contentious Relations Over DLC Performance

The discussion of the game's critical reception emerged when the conversation turned to the Dead Money expansion, which incorporated survival horror elements that diverged significantly from the core Fallout experience. Avellone acknowledged the expansion's divisive nature, explaining that while conceptually interesting, the dramatic departure from established gameplay alienated many players.

When pressed about sales performance and critical scores, Avellone disclosed that Bethesda had weaponized review metrics against Obsidian. "Bethesda used review scores against us for the DLCs for, like, why they didn't want to keep doing things with us anyway," he stated, despite noting that the publisher appeared reluctant to continue the partnership regardless of the content's reception.

The Morale-Crushing Presentation

Describing the fateful presentation, Avellone recalled the experience with clear frustration: "They had a whole powerpoint about all the things Obsidian did wrong, and we were like 'Wow!' and they showed it to us. And we were like… 'OK, this is hugely morale-boosting.'"

The developer expressed bewilderment at what he perceived as ingratitude, remarking: "I thought we did a good product for you guys that kept Fallout in the public consciousness, but you guys don't seem very happy about it despite the fact you reaped a lot of the rewards for it."

Aftermath and Moving Forward

Following the partnership's dissolution, Bethesda assumed direct control of the franchise for subsequent mainline entries, developing Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 in-house. Obsidian transitioned to creating original intellectual properties, including the Pillars of Eternity series, The Outer Worlds, Grounded, and Pentiment.

Avellone noted that early discussions surrounding a potential Fallout: New Vegas sequel ultimately never materialized, with the concept "quickly evaporating" as the relationship between publisher and developer deteriorated. The developer departed from Obsidian in 2015.
