The news about electric vehicles tends to be more about EVs used for personal transportation because most of us humans have cars, SUVs, trucks, scooters, and motorcycles so we easily understand this transportation type. Fleet vehicles are being electrified too and they do a lot of work in a variety of settings that may mostly go unnoticed by members of the public.
Electric buses, garbage trucks, semi trucks, and port cargo movers might not be as cool or sexy as personal transportation, but electrifying fleet vehicles can reduce energy consumption and air pollution. It also can save money.
A new autonomous freight startup called Humble has launched, and it looks intriguing. The CEO and Founder, Eyal Cohen, answered some questions for CleanTechnica.
What is a fully autonomous, cabless, electric hauler and how can it be controlled?
The Humble Hauler is a fully autonomous, cabless, electric Class 8 vehicle designed from the ground up for modern logistics. By removing the cab, we reduce weight and increase usable payload capacity, while simplifying the system for autonomy.
It’s powered by advanced vision-language-action (VLA) models that allow the vehicle to understand its surroundings and make decisions in real time. This enables the system to reason through complex, dynamic environments and respond safely, even in unfamiliar scenarios. Because we design both the vehicle and the autonomy stack in-house, we can optimize the entire system end-to-end.
We deliver this as a fully managed service, where Humble operates the vehicle and handles the movement of freight for our customers.
Where will it be used?
The Humble Hauler is designed for logistics environments such as warehouses, railyards, and seaports. These structured environments are a natural starting point for autonomy, where we can deliver immediate value and operate safely at scale.
Who will be the customers?
We’re in active conversations with a range of customers across the supply chain, particularly shippers, manufacturers, and intermodal operators.
These customers are looking for more reliable and cost-effective ways to move goods, especially on repetitive routes where consistency and efficiency are critical.
How much cargo can it carry?
Up to 82,000 pounds gross vehicle weight under federal limits for an electric Class 8 vehicle. The cargo payload we can take depends on configuration, but is expected to be higher than typical.
Will it be fully electric and have its own batteries?
Yes, the Humble Hauler is fully electric. Electric is the logical choice for a fully autonomous vehicle that can move freight from dock-to-dock. Electrification reduces fuel volatility, lowers maintenance requirements, and supports sustainability goals across logistics operations.
What are the benefits to using this type of hauler?
The biggest advantage is a step change in efficiency, cost, and reliability across freight operations.
